Bunaken Manado

Bunaken is one of North Sulawesi’s most iconic marine destinations, where crystal-clear tropical waters reveal an extraordinary underwater world of coral reefs, dramatic reef walls, and abundant marine life.

Located just off the coast of Manado, Bunaken forms part of Bunaken National Park, a protected marine area situated within the Coral Triangle, one of the richest regions for marine biodiversity on Earth.

The journey to Bunaken already feels like an escape. As the boat leaves Manado behind, the city gradually disappears and is replaced by open blue water, small islands, and the distinctive volcanic silhouette of Manado Tua rising from the sea.

In around 30–45 minutes by motorboat from Manado, visitors can reach an environment where life is closely connected to the ocean and the pace feels noticeably slower.

Beneath the surface is where Bunaken truly reveals its character.

The waters surrounding the island are home to extensive coral reefs, tropical fish, sea turtles, mollusks, and countless other marine species. Colorful coral formations stretch across the shallows before suddenly dropping into spectacular underwater walls that descend deep into the blue.

These dramatic reef walls are among Bunaken’s most recognizable underwater landscapes and one of the main reasons the area has become internationally known as a diving destination.

For scuba divers, Bunaken offers a wide variety of underwater experiences.

Many dive sites feature steep coral walls covered with sea fans, sponges, hard corals, and soft corals. Schools of tropical fish move along the reef while larger marine animals occasionally appear from the deeper water.

Depending on the location, season, and ocean conditions, divers may encounter:

  • Green sea turtles
  • Hawksbill turtles
  • Butterflyfish
  • Angelfish
  • Surgeonfish
  • Barracuda
  • Napoleon wrasse
  • Reef sharks
  • Moray eels
  • Nudibranchs
  • Various species of crustaceans and reef fish

One of the most memorable experiences in Bunaken is drifting alongside its underwater walls.

Instead of exploring only a flat coral reef, divers can move parallel to enormous vertical reef formations covered with marine life. Looking toward the wall reveals countless small organisms living among the coral, while looking toward the open ocean creates an almost endless view into the deep blue.

The experience creates a unique sense of scale that makes diving in Bunaken feel very different from many other tropical dive destinations.

But Bunaken is not only for certified divers.

Many of its shallow reefs can also be explored while snorkeling.

In clear conditions, visitors can float above colorful coral gardens and watch schools of reef fish moving beneath them. In some areas, the shallow reef suddenly transitions into a deep underwater wall, allowing snorkelers to experience the dramatic underwater geography of Bunaken without scuba equipment.

Sea turtles are among the animals most closely associated with the Bunaken experience.

Seeing a turtle slowly swimming along the reef wall, surfacing for air, or resting around the coral can easily become one of the highlights of a visit.

Wildlife encounters should always be enjoyed from a respectful distance. Visitors should avoid touching, chasing, or feeding marine animals so that they can continue their natural behavior without disturbance.

Above the water, Bunaken offers a completely different atmosphere.

The island is surrounded by tropical coastline, mangrove areas, small villages, and views toward neighboring islands and the mountains of mainland North Sulawesi.

Away from the busier areas, visitors can experience a quieter side of island life where fishing boats, coastal communities, and the surrounding sea remain an important part of everyday life.

The landscape surrounding Bunaken is also one of the destination’s greatest attractions.

From the water, visitors can see Manado Tua, a volcanic island rising dramatically from the sea. Together with Bunaken, Siladen, Mantehage, and Nain, these islands create one of North Sulawesi’s most recognizable marine landscapes.

For photographers, Bunaken offers opportunities both above and below the surface.

Underwater photographers can capture colorful coral reefs, turtles, macro marine life, and dramatic reef walls, while surface photography offers tropical coastlines, traditional boats, island villages, sunsets, and views of Manado Tua.

The best experience in Bunaken often comes from slowing down.

Spend the morning exploring the reef, return to the island for lunch, walk through the village, relax beside the sea, and watch the light change across the surrounding islands.

For travelers who prefer a deeper experience, staying overnight on Bunaken or nearby islands such as Siladen allows more time to explore different dive and snorkeling locations without rushing back to Manado.

Bunaken can also become part of a wider journey through North Sulawesi.

Travelers can combine the destination with:

  • Manado for city experiences and local cuisine
  • Siladen for quieter island surroundings
  • Manado Tua for volcanic island scenery
  • Lembeh Strait for world-famous muck diving and macro photography
  • Tangkoko Nature Reserve for endemic wildlife and rainforest exploration
  • Likupang for beaches and coastal landscapes
  • Minahasa Highlands for mountains, lakes, and highland culture

Combining Bunaken with Tangkoko creates an especially interesting journey.

In Bunaken, travelers explore North Sulawesi beneath the sea.

In Tangkoko, the experience continues inside tropical rainforest inhabited by endemic animals such as the Sulawesi crested black macaque and tarsier.

Together, they show how remarkably diverse North Sulawesi can be within a relatively small geographic area.

Bunaken is more than a place to dive.

It is a destination where volcanic islands, tropical communities, coral reefs, and an extraordinary marine ecosystem exist side by side.

Whether exploring a coral wall beneath the surface, snorkeling above a shallow reef, watching a sea turtle disappear into the blue, or simply looking toward Manado Tua from a boat, Bunaken offers a chance to experience one of North Sulawesi’s most remarkable natural environments.

For travelers who love the ocean, wildlife, photography, diving, snorkeling, or simply discovering extraordinary places, Bunaken remains one of the essential destinations in North Sulawesi.
