Tangkoko is one of the most fascinating wildlife destinations in Indonesia and a special place for birdwatchers and bird photographers. Hidden in the tropical forests of North Sulawesi, this unique landscape offers an incredible opportunity to experience birds and wildlife living freely in their natural habitat.
For those who love birds, Tangkoko is much more than simply a place to visit. It is a place to slow down, listen, observe, and discover.

The Forest Comes Alive
As the first light enters the forest, the sounds of birds begin to fill the trees. Calls come from different directions, movement can be seen among the branches, and the forest slowly becomes alive. With patience and careful observation, every walk can bring a new encounter.
Around 150 species of birds have been recorded in the Tangkoko area, with many of them being endemic to Sulawesi. This makes Tangkoko an exciting destination for anyone who wants to discover the unique birdlife of Sulawesi and experience these species in the wild.
But the Tangkoko Bird Expedition is not limited to one forest or one type of habitat.

Exploring Different Habitats
During this four-day expedition, we will explore several different areas around Tangkoko, including the mangrove forest, Temboan Valley, and Tangkoko Nature Tourism Park.
Each place offers a different landscape, atmosphere, and wildlife experience.
Mangrove Forest
The mangrove area provides a completely different environment from the deep tropical forest. Here, the landscape changes, the vegetation is different, and different species of birds can be encountered. It is an opportunity to see another side of the rich ecosystem surrounding Tangkoko.
Temboan Valley
In Temboan Valley, the experience becomes even more special. Surrounded by forest and natural landscapes, this area offers another perspective of the Tangkoko ecosystem and the opportunity to explore places where birds and wildlife move freely through the vegetation.
Tangkoko Nature Tourism Park
Then there is Tangkoko Nature Tourism Park, the heart of the expedition. This is where we spend time exploring the forest, following trails, listening for bird calls, and searching patiently for species hidden among the trees.
---
More Than the Number of Species
The experience is not only about how many species we can find.
It is about the moments in between — the sound of wings moving through the forest, a bird suddenly appearing on a branch, the morning light passing through the trees, or a quiet moment when wildlife comes close enough to observe and photograph.
And Tangkoko is not only a paradise for birds.
During the expedition, you will also have the opportunity to encounter some of Sulawesi’s most fascinating wildlife.
---
Sulawesi Crested Macaque
One of the most memorable encounters is with the Sulawesi Crested Macaque, locally known as Yaki. These black primates are an important part of Tangkoko’s wildlife and can often be observed moving through the forest, feeding, resting, or interacting with one another.
As the forest becomes darker and the daytime birds become quieter, another extraordinary animal begins to appear.
---
Tarsius
The tiny Tarsius, one of the world’s smallest primates, comes alive at night. With its enormous eyes, small body, and remarkable ability to move through the darkness, seeing a Tarsius in its natural environment can become one of the highlights of the entire expedition.
---
Bear Cuscus
Another unique animal we may encounter is the Bear Cuscus, an unusual marsupial native to Sulawesi. Seeing this quiet and often elusive animal resting high in the trees is a reminder of how different and special Sulawesi’s wildlife is.
---
For Bird Photographers
For bird photographers, these encounters offer more than a simple checklist.
They provide opportunities to capture behavior, atmosphere, natural light, and authentic moments in the wild.
You may arrive in Tangkoko looking for a particular bird, but the forest often has something else waiting for you.
Perhaps a hornbill flying between the trees.
Perhaps a small endemic bird appearing for only a few seconds.
Perhaps the movement of a Yaki family group through the forest.
Or perhaps, when darkness arrives, the unmistakable eyes of a Tarsius looking back at you.

This Is What Makes Tangkoko Special
This is what makes Tangkoko special.
Every trail has its own story. Every habitat brings a different experience. And every day in the forest can be completely different from the one before.
